Guangzhou
Friday, June 15th, 2007

On a recent trip to Guangzhou in China I managed to steal away a few hours from work to take in the sights. The city is massive and limited time meant I only managed to walk round the Beijing Lu commercial area. Heavy rain, which resulted in flooding in the surrounding Guangdong province, didn’t help but I carried my camera around most times and so snapped at any available opportunity.
The city as a whole, or at least what I saw of it, is nothing really to shout about. The two things that stick out in my mind are firstly all the shop signage and huge billboard and poster adverts, which really only come alive at night. Secondly is that people appear to drive however they want, and even park wherever they choose, without the slightest concern for other traffic. Other than that, it is a city much like any other commercial city. Although to be fair, I never really got to see much of it.
UPDATE: I failed to mention, as was pointed out to me in the comments by Yasmin, that Guangzhou is a shopping heaven which indeed it is.

I think you left out the shopping heaven. Guang Zhou is known as shopping heaven.

Hi Yasmin. Indeed it is a shopping heaven, thanks for that.

Sorry - could only give this album a 1 rating. I don’t think I’d much like this city.

No need to be sorry.
These photographs aren’t the best adverts for the city, I’ll admit.
